The national archive of moving pictures at ANIM is the department of the Cinemateca Portuguesa responsible for safeguarding and conserving film heritage and moving pictures in general. ANIM's mission is to locate, retrieve, conserve, preserve, restore, catalogue and provide access to film and other moving pictures, on all supports and from all periods, regardless of format, genre, production regime or provenance. It is also responsible for compiling and cataloguing information on all Portuguese or Portuguese-related film production.The ANIM facility is located in the district of Loures, near Lisbon, and comprises three buildings occupying a total area of 7,285 m2. These buildings contain: - A conservation section, including special storage facilities for nitrate, triacetate and polyester film stock as well as images in electronic format; - A preservation and restoration section, complete with restoration laboratory; - A prospecting and heritage section dealing with procedures for new additions to conserved materials; - A cataloguing section; - A specialist viewing section; - A filmographic research section; - A new format section (film-video and video-video transfer, analog and digital image processing).
